Settling In

7.11.2011

It's hard to believe, but here I am, already moved into my new house in Indiana. My mom drove up from Florida to help us get settled in (thanks, Mom!) so we are now about halfway out of boxes. Indiana is gorgeous, the weather is hot (yay, a real summer!), and I love my new house. I was excited that the space we decided on for my sewing room is a nice size, but not so much that it was the color of a watermelon--bright green on two walls, hot pink on the others.

Yeah. Good thing Mom brought her painting gear.

It took what seemed like forever to decide what color to paint my room. Blue is one of my favorite colors, and there are so many gorgeous blue craft rooms these days, Photobucket like this one and this one. But my new room doesn't get great light, and I was worried that it would look a bit like an aquarium in there.

After putting up a couple of swatches, I decided on a pretty peachy pink, called Ballet Slipper Pink by Martha Stewart, mixed at 50% strength. It looked a little dingy at full strength, but brightened right up with a bit of white in it (the photo to the left compares the two).

I think it will be a great background color and it is so relaxing and retro. Peach + turquoise might be my new favorite color combo (see below). Added bonus: my room no longer glows kryptonite green.

After a couple of days of unpacking boxes, I got a fun surprise. Photobucket My sweet old teddy bear, Apricot, said Hello after her long voyage from Wisconsin. I've had her since I was a wee tot of 5 or 6, but I had forgotten that she was tucked away somewhere in my belongings as I hadn't seen her for some time.

And when I picked her up to give her a little squeeze, I realized that she is exactly the same color as my new walls. No wonder I feel a little twinge of nostalgia whenever I go into my sewing room.

There is still tons of work to do to put my space together, but I'm enjoying the process. I hope to show you my sewing spot once I find a new chair (Pink Thrifty Chair that I found for $9.00--I know!--pictured below is a bit too short). I've been searching since we came here and I have had no luck finding a sturdy enough chair whilst lurking about in local antique shops. Ah, well. I suppose I'll just have to keep shopping...

More to come very soon!

Happy stitching,
Kim

P.S. Thanks so much for everyone's kind e-mails and to those who left suggestions of things to do in Indiana. I’m lucky to have moved to such a fun state and I cannot wait to hit the road and really get to know the place!

  2. Both my sister and I have that same bear. She has the pink one like yours. Mine was tan, and her name was Mama Bear. Both of our bears have also lost their noses.

  9. FYI Kokomo Ind has the National Gourd show in May. If you are in to growing or crafting with gourds that is something to see. Also I live in Elkhart County and the state's largest 4H fair is here, starts next week. I grew up in Indianapolis and the Elkhart county fair is almost as big as the Indiana State Fair. Also definietly do Shipshewana. Great place to eat in Shipshe is The Blue Gate-Amish food or Middlebury is great with the Essenhaus and their shops. At the Essenhaus you must try family style, menu is good but family style Amish food is what they are famous for. Nashville Ind is great too and that is in Brown County one of the most beautiful state parks I know is located there and people come from all over to see the leaves in the fall. My sisters and I and spouses rent an A frame there in winter. Also southern Ind has a wonderful covered bridge festival. There is lots to do and love in Indiana-can you tell I love it?! Enjoy the move!!

  10. There is a fun looking craft fair in Bloomington that I would love to attend this fall. I won't have a booth but would love to check it out as a possibility for next year. It might be a great place to meet up with some of you who live in the area, too :)

There's another fair in Indianapolis, but I'm not sure if they have an event in the fall. Does anybody know?

Good luck with selling your house! Our house in Wisconsin is still on the market but we had to leave so hubby could start work here. Happy house selling thoughts!

  13. Sue, the items in the sidebar are PDF patterns. I hope to have finished items in my etsy shop once I get back to sewing :)

  15. Glad to see the move went well and thanks to Mom you are almost settled. From the other posts it looks as if you could be busy for a year. Don't forget Illinois is close and lots to see in Chicago. I love the sewing room. It is more organized than mine. Good luck in the new home.

  19. I love the ballerina pink color! It is VERY perfect. I can't wait to see your entire craft room rehab. I hope you share all of your pictures with us. Right now my life is packed up and ready to move into our first home, so I can't craft and have just been posting inspiration photos on my blog lately.

I love the mustard-y yellow cabinets!

  20. Have you thought about putting wheels or casters on your pink chair? That will give it a couple of inches in height

  22. hi kim!
i can't remember how i stumbled across your blog but talk about luck!

i was trying to figure out how to make a simple rag doll, making some sketches of a girlie with a triangle body, round head and thin legs, but i struggled with the hair. i went to the internet for inspiration and i found exactly what i was looking for in your greta doll. serious cute! there is a little girl in indiana who will be very happy this weekend.

i'm sure you have some tips on putting her all together, so i will be buying your pattern soon. i already have several requests for more dolls! she's just perfect.

thank you for sharing your amazing handiwork with the world so folks like me can be inspired.

    fellow hoosier,
    melly
